Middle School: Grades 6-8

At St. Peter’s, our Middle School program (Grades 6-8) builds on the strong academic and spiritual foundation established in the elementary years. As students transition into adolescence, they are provided with a rigorous and well-rounded education that fosters intellectual growth, character development, and spiritual maturity. The Middle School years at St. Peter's are designed to prepare students for the challenges of high school and beyond, ensuring that they are not only equipped with a deep understanding of core subjects but also with the critical thinking skills, personal responsibility, and compassion necessary for success in all areas of life.

The core curriculum in Middle School includes English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Religion. These subjects are taught at a level that encourages students to engage with material more deeply and abstractly, developing the analytical and problem-solving skills that will serve them in high school and throughout life.

  • English Language Arts (ELA) focuses on refining students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students engage with a variety of literary genres—including novels, poetry, essays, and plays—and explore themes such as identity, social justice, and personal growth. They practice writing for different purposes, from creative storytelling to persuasive essays, and develop the ability to articulate their ideas clearly and effectively. Critical reading and writing skills are further honed through analysis of complex texts, research projects, and class discussions.

  • Mathematics in Middle School builds a solid foundation in algebra, geometry, and problem-solving. Students work with more advanced concepts such as variables, equations, integers, fractions, and basic statistical principles. By applying these concepts to real-world problems, they learn to approach challenges systematically and logically, building confidence in their mathematical abilities. All eighth grade students complete Algebra 1 by graduation. Our curriculum prepares students for success in high school mathematics and beyond.

  • Science encourages students to think like scientists. Students study physical science, life science, and earth science, conducting experiments, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions. The focus is on inquiry-based learning—students are encouraged to ask questions, explore concepts in depth, and understand how scientific principles apply to everyday life. Whether studying the scientific method, ecosystems, or the properties of matter, students gain the critical thinking skills necessary for scientific exploration.

  • Social Studies broadens students’ understanding of history, geography, government, economics, and the global community. Middle School students study ancient civilizations, world history, U.S. history, and contemporary global issues, learning how historical events shape the world today. They engage in projects that require them to assess sources, analyze differing viewpoints, and develop informed opinions. This subject fosters an appreciation for diversity and a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of societies around the world.

  • Religion continues to be a cornerstone of the Middle School experience at St. Peter’s. Students deepen their understanding of Catholic teachings and reflect on how they can live out Gospel values in their daily lives. Through Bible study, prayer, and ethical discussions, they learn to develop a personal relationship with God and grow in faith. Opportunities for service learning are integrated into the curriculum, allowing students to apply their religious education by helping others and making a positive impact on their communities. Through service projects, retreats, and reflection, students are encouraged to practice compassion, empathy, and social justice.

In addition to the core curriculum, St. Peter’s Middle School students engage in a variety of enrichment courses that further develop their skills, talents, and interests:

  • Spanish instruction begins to expand students' knowledge of language and culture. Emphasis is placed on communication skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—in Spanish. Students explore cultural traditions, customs, and history of Spanish-speaking countries, which enhances their global awareness and prepares them for future opportunities in a multilingual world.

  • Technology education plays a key role in developing digital literacy, critical thinking, and responsible technology use. Students learn to use a variety of tools to research, collaborate, and create digital projects. Emphasis is placed on understanding both the opportunities and challenges posed by technology, including ethical considerations and the importance of online safety.

  • Art and Music provide students with opportunities to express themselves creatively while developing an appreciation for the arts. In Art, students explore various mediums and techniques, from drawing and painting to sculpture and digital art. In Music, students learn the fundamentals of music theory, participate in vocal and instrumental performances, and appreciate the cultural significance of music in different societies.

  • Physical Education helps students develop physical fitness, teamwork, and an understanding of healthy lifestyle choices. Students participate in a variety of activities that promote physical coordination, strength, and endurance, as well as lessons on nutrition, wellness, and personal fitness. The goal is to foster an appreciation for lifelong physical activity and wellness.

As students mature throughout these years, they are challenged to think critically and abstractly, assess issues from multiple perspectives, and present solutions in clear, organized ways. Problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity are emphasized across all subjects, ensuring that students are prepared for the complexity and challenges of the modern world.

St. Peter’s Middle School also places great importance on personal development. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, develop leadership skills, and practice good decision-making. They are provided with a supportive environment where they are respected as individuals and encouraged to grow in their social, emotional, and intellectual capacities.
