| You can see this week’s list of events to find out what’s happening now at St. Peter School! Boston College Educational Seismology Project Boston College Seismology Project Website View the Saint Peter Seismograph Online Saint Peter 4th through 8th graders have been locating and measuring earthquakes all over the world from our newly updated science lab, thanks to our participation in the Boston College Educational Seismology Project (BCESP). Thanks to the addition of our very own seismograph, which is linked to the internet and the growing network of seismic research stations around the world, our students will record seismic waves as they hit Cambridge and using the information gathered to determine the epicenter, focus, and magnitude of earthquakes from as far away as Southeast Asia! But the geo-science education doesn’t end there. Once a week, lead seismologist, Anastasia Macherides Moulis, of the Weston Observatory (Boston College), assists Mr. Hadly in administering state-of-the-art geo-science labs developed by B.C. Professors to our fortunate students. She will even be doing some age-appropriate labs for our 4th graders. Our new seismograph will be linked into the science lab computer, which will in turn be linked to a wall-mounted flat screen TV in the science lab so students can witness first-hand the seismic reading recorded by the seismograph. The school is also linking the seismograph to a wall-mounted TV in the cafeteria so everyone can check on earthquakes happening around the world. On average, the United States experiences 35 earthquakes every day, which means that around the world, hundreds of earthquakes occur every day. Now our students can go home and tell their parents about the day’s earthquakes before the newspapers even hear about them! Here are some photographs of a fourth grade class with Boston College teacher and seismologist Stacy Moulis. They are working with hard boiled eggs and comparing and contrasting the egg's composition to the earth's composition:
